Daekyo Group and Its Chairman Kang, Young-joong Donates One Billion Won to Konkuk University’s “Sangheoeuisuk Scholarship” Fund
Daekyo Group and its Chairman Kang, Young-joong donated one billion won for Konkuk University’s “Sangheoeuisuk Scholarship” fund, an all-covering scholarship fund which was launched with an aim of nurturing preeminent and creative brains.
An agreement was signed between Chairman Kang of Daekyo and President Kim of Konkuk University at the President Office of Konkuk University at 2 pm on December 5, 2011.
The program was named after the pen name of Dr. Yu, Seok-chang, who was a Korean independence activist and founder of Konkuk University. It takes Japan’s “Matsushida Institute of Government and Management” which is famous for nurturing numerous leaders in the areas of politics and economics in Japan as its model. The program is designed to provide all educational and career development cost to talented and creative students. The pen name of Dr. Yu “Sangheo” comes from the two phrases of “Sangnyeomgeonguk”, which means to always think about setting the country toward the right direction, and “Heosimminjok”, which means to rise above self for the prosperity of all.
Konkuk University has introduced this scholarship program in order to nurture next-generation leaders of Korea. With this program in place, the University will select ten students with excellent academic capability and creativity and provide for tuition fee, dormitory and book costs, overseas education programs, and other costs related to their education from undergraduate courses to graduate courses for master’s and doctorate degrees. The students will not only get full tuition fees, but also opportunities to participate in Konkuk University’s student exchange programs with one of its sister universities, have overseas language training, take part in its overseas internship programs, receive tailored career development assistance and have the benefit of a tutor system from celebrities in Korea.
Daekyo decided to donate one billion won for this program in order to join Konkuk University’s efforts to nurture creative human resources and develop next generation leaders of Korea.
The scholarship’s model “Matsushida Institute of Government and Management” was established by Mr. Matsushida Konosuke, the founder of Matsushida Electric Industrial Co. out of his belief that the then educational system of Japan that had been set up after the second World War was not good enough to help fully recover a defeated nation, Japan. Therefore, he established the institute and invited prestigious professors from all over the world to nurture leaders in the areas of politics and economics and selected 20 students. And the graduates of this institute helped spread world’s state-of-the-art knowledge across Japan, thereby serving as a driving force behind Japan’s economic growth.
Daekyo’s Chairman Kang, Young-joong said, “Daekyo Group, one of Korea’s top education companies, has been making its efforts to make a better world for all, and it is involved in various kinds of social contribution programs including nurturing brains, child protection, youth support and education programs, culture and sports.” He also said, “Nurturing next-generation leaders is very important, and I believe that we desperately need an institute that can develop such brains. Konkuk has a special brains nurturing program, and we decided to donate one billion won.”
President Kim of Konkuk University said, “In order to strengthen our University’s competitiveness, we are speeding up our efforts to collect more fund money for academic programs such as the “Sangheoeuisuk Fund” that can further develop our university.” He also said, “The fund will be used for the development of brains and the university. With such effort, we are planning to educate future leaders in all sectors of our society and bring our university to a higher level by becoming a truly smart and global university.”
