Dr.Kang donates 100 million won to UNICEF
Kang, Young-joong, President of BWF (President of the World Youth & Culture Foundation) has donated 100 million Korean Won (about 87,000USD) to UNICEF Committee Korea in order to help Haiti’s recover from the earthquake that shook the nation on January 12th.
Chairman Kang said, “We all need to join our hands and help countries around the globe that suffer from natural disasters recover regardless of ideological or national boundaries. In particular, all children on earth need to be able to fully enjoy their rights to be educated regardless of the condition or environment in which they live.”
The World Youth & Culture Foundation, since its founding in 2007, has been conducting sports related public-interest programs and academic and artistic scholarship programs for youths in developing countries. It is also implementing various activities in order to give a better life to the children and youths around the world, including the donations to Myanmar when it was hit hard by the cyclone and to Sichuan, China when it was devastated from the massive earthquake back in 2008.
Chairman Kang’s relationship with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon dates back to 2005 when he received the grand prize of the 2005 Proud Korean Awards. And it seems that this relationship has led to the decision to give a donation to UNICEF, one of the UN agencies.
The photo above was taken last winter when Chairman Kang had a dinner with Secretary General Ban during his visit to New York. Secretary General Ban said that when he was young, he was a member of the Korea Scout Association, which is currently led by Chairman Kang and that what he had learned back then helped him a lot over the course of his life.
