2010 BWF Annual General Meeting and Council Meetings held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Chairman Kang, Young-joong attended the BWF Council Meetings which were held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 13~21, 2010.
This year’s Annual General Meeting was also held during the Thomas/Uber Cup Games, and for men’s final games, Malaysia’s King Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and his queen, Nur Zahirah were present at the stadium to celebrate the successful games and presented the trophy to the winners. The Chinese team won the Thomas Cup, and the South Korean team won the Uber Cup.
During the AGM and Council Meetings, discussions were focused on the selection of Premier Super Series events for the next Super Series circuit and ways to further promote and develop badminton including enhancing the sport’s brand value. Other main discussions that took place were those on Women in Sports, which is being promoted by the IOC.
The Badminton World Federation had its second Council Meeting on the 21st and selected 5 hosts for Premier Super Series events for 2011-2013. A total of 8 countries have submitted their applications, and among those, Korea, China, Indonesia, England and Denmark were chosen.
Korea had proposed the highest 1.2 million US dollars for its prize money, followed by Indonesia’s USD600,000 and the rest three countries USD350,000. BWF President Kang, Young-joong said, “the prize money of an international event has for the first time exceeded one million dollars, and it is significant for the future of badminton. We are moving towards the right direction that will lead us to further develop our sport.” President Kang was very pleased to see that the blue print that he had suggested when he first took office as President of IBF is now not far away from being a reality.
World-class players were also happy with the news. Men’s double Kien Keat KOO-Boond Heong TAN from Malaysia, ranked world’s No. 1, said during their interview with a local news paper said, “It will serve as a positive stimulus for all the players. It is a meaningful opportunity to enhance badminton’s standing and its popularity.”
